Silhouette User Interface Has Come!

Best Way Of Controlling Out-Of-Touch

CEATEC JAPAN 2014

TATSUNO CITY, Japan--()--A small Japanese startup (JUICE DESIGN Co.,Ltd.) has developed an outstanding method of controlling a machine with a free hand.

Using the conventional concept of gesture recognition, it is possible to point a finger at the computer screen so that the cursor will move. But, it is difficult to recognize a virtual touch screen and get haptic feedback.

The newly-developed method “Silhouette User Interface” will pave much easier way for gestural equivalents of the mouse click. In this method, first, a 3D camera (e.g. KINECT, Leapmotion, or RealSense sensor) captures the movement of the user's hand. Second, the system displays the silhouette of the user's hand. Importantly, buttons are automatically transformed into “touch-enabled” ones. Finally, the user can conduct a mouse click equivalent by picking up one of the touch-enabled buttons with his/her hand silhouette.

The haptic feedback problem is resolved by the gesture of touching the tips of one's fingers. Hence, the user can quickly and precisely conduct mouse click equivalents. Silhouette User Interface (SUI) will be adopted on a wide scale including a smart TV, a smart glass, an interactive digital signage, in-car monitor etc. SUI will radically change the situation of non-contact operation world.
