LONDON--()--Ahead of this year’s Movember Wuaki.tv, a leading movie and TV streaming service, has today revealed Tom Selleck has the nation’s favourite on-screen moustache.

In the run up to Movember, Wuaki.tv asked 1,000 people to vote for the TV and movie character or actor with the best moustache. Tom Selleck, who has famously worn a moustache in a variety of roles, from Magnum, P.I. to Three Men and a Baby, was by far the favourite with almost one third of the votes.

Elaborate moustache styles also proved popular. Dustin Hoffman’s curled ‘tache in 1991 blockbuster Hook claimed the second spot, with almost one in ten of the votes. The classic Charlie Chaplin mo came in a close third place, and even cartoon character Ned Flanders made the top 10.

Top 10 on-screen moustaches:

1. Tom Selleck, various titles

2. Dustin Hoffman/Captain Hook, Hook

3. Charlie Chaplin, various titles

4. Ned Flanders, The Simpsons

5. Will Ferrell/Ron Burgundy, Anchor Man

6. Daniel Day Lewis/Bill "the Butcher" Cutting, Gangs of New York

7. Ben Stiller/ White Goodman, Dodgeball

8. George Clooney/Frank Stokes, The Monuments Men

9. Samuel L. Jackson/Jules Winnfield, Pulp Fiction

10. Sascha Baron Cohen/Borat, Borat

One of The Movember Foundation’s top tips for growing a ‘tache is “for every style of moustache there is a different personality. You will become that man, you will be treated as that man and you will act like that man”. It seems Tom Selleck’s characters are amongst the most appealing moustache-wearers, compared to the likes of Ron Burgundy or Borat.

“Movember participants are always citing Tom Selleck’s moustache as one to imitate” says Sarah Coughlan, UK Director at The Movember Foundation. “While it doesn’t have as distinct a style as the likes of Hoffman’s Captain Hook or Charlie Chaplin, there’s something about it that really draws people in when they’re growing a Movember ‘tache of their own.”

“For anyone who thinks their moustache could be as good, if not better, they can sign up for Movember today and enter our International Man of Movember 2014 competition, and be in with a chance of joining the ultimate moustache Hall of Fame.”

Tom should be warned though, it seems his moustache is much more popular with the over-25s with the majority of 18-25 year olds preferring the more recent appearances of comedians Will Ferrell in Anchor Man and Ben Stiller in Dodgeball to the classic Tom Selleck mo.

The Movember Foundation’s top tips for growing a great mo are:

  • Ask yourself the question, who do you want to be? For every style of moustache there is a different personality. You will become that man, you will be treated as that man and you will act like that man. It's important you like who he is.
  • Be brave. The first few days, even weeks, can be uncomfortable and a little awkward as your facial fuzz grows and your Mo takes shape.
  • Ignore the itching. Remind yourself that other men have endured worse in the past; surely you can stand a little face tickle from your Mo.
  • Start to shape your moustache using proper grooming techniques. A great Mo comes down to great grooming.
  • Nurture it and keep it clean. Look after your Mo, and your Mo will look after you.
