First time living on your own? Check out renters insurance tips from GEICO before you move in

WASHINGTON--()--Your first apartment is a huge step on the path to independence and freedom, and it may not be too much bigger than your dorm room or your room at home, but it’s your apartment, your space and your stuff. GEICO says you should protect it with renters insurance before you move in.

“Unless you have enough money saved to replace everything that you own if a disaster happens, you will need renters insurance,” said John Zinno, president of GEICO Insurance Agency. “Your landlord’s insurance only covers the building, common areas and liability protection. If there is a theft, fire or other disaster, you are responsible for all of your things that are in your unit.”

Renters insurance covers personal belongings, medical payments, loss of use, liability (in case someone gets injured), and your treasured valuables. You may not think you own much of anything of value, but once you tally up the cost of all your clothes, furniture, computer, software, entertainment system, microwave and CD collection, renter's insurance can add up to a real bargain, saving you thousands of dollars from replacement of your belongings.

Zinno says some landlords may require renters insurance once you move in, so it’s always diligent to find out what is covered in a renters insurance policy. “Check out the coverage options for clothing, jewelry, electronics, and even furniture and ask questions if you are not sure. Get an estimate of the values of your items, should you ever need to replace them,” said Zinno. “In the long run, it’s all about protecting yourself financially.”
