Education Tech Company Flat World Adds Seasoned Leaders to Fuel Growth of Learning Platform

  • SAP's Sunil Chandran joins Flat World as chief technology officer to build out company's SaaS platform
  • The Advisory Board Company's Noah Rosenberg tapped as senior vice president of finance and strategy to expand competency-based learning partnerships

WASHINGTON--()--Flat World, a provider of digital learning content and mobile adaptive social learning platform, today announced the additions of Sunil Chandran, former vice president at SAP's SuccessFactors, and Noah Rosenberg, former managing director of the Education Advisory Board, to its executive team.

Chandran has assumed the role of chief technology officer to develop Flat World's SaaS learning platform, while Rosenberg has been brought in to direct Flat World's major operations as the senior vice president of finance and strategy. These additions to Flat World's executive team underline the company's focus on building the infrastructure needed to guide the company as it changes the landscape of modern education. As educators and policymakers continue to gravitate toward competency-based learning and other experimental approaches, Flat World is playing a vital role in providing scalable, digital solutions that make such experimentation possible.

With more than 17 years of experience in the software industry, Chandran has held a variety of technical and management positions in companies ranging from startups to larger corporations. Most recently he was directly responsible for managing the engineering team of the SuccessFactors Learning product — an industry-leading cloud-based corporate LMS solution with more than 16 million users across the globe.

"We are at a critical juncture in education, and Flat World is really poised to catalyze the whole industry toward much needed change," Chandran said. "There is legitimate concern that there are not enough qualified people with the necessary knowledge and skills entering the workforce, and my main objective at Flat World will be to find the best ways to leverage technology to give students effective and affordable education."

Rosenberg most recently served at The Advisory Board Company subsidiary Education Advisory Board, where he was responsible for launching and growing software and advisory businesses serving higher education executives. He has also held management positions at M&T Bank, Deloitte Consulting and CEB.

"Creating a comprehensive learning program that eliminates conceptual bottlenecks is key to providing rich learning experiences," Rosenberg said. "My immediate goal with Flat World will be identifying new partnerships with institutions that are already creating exemplary programs. We can then work together to identify the chronically difficult concepts students struggle with, and then co-create content that supports competency-based learning."

Both Chandran and Rosenberg will play key roles in expanding Flat World's competency-based platform, which allows students to work at their own pace to master the material. The company's first partner, Brandman University, began its first CBL cohort in the 2014-15 academic year and will serve as a blueprint for other institutions looking to experiment with the modern instructional approach.

"We have worked hard to assemble a stellar executive team who are passionate about education and who can be leaders both to our organization and to our industry as a whole," said Christopher Etesse, CEO of Flat World. "Sunil and Noah will fit in seamlessly with our management team because they have proven they have what it takes to strategically propel companies forward. We are excited to have them on board as we bring Flat World – and education – into the future."
