SEATTLE--()--Just in time for Labor Day weekend, today Redfin, the customer-first real estate brokerage, released a list of the 10 best cities for boaters. With help from Discover Boating and Weather.com, Redfin determined which regions have the most waterfront property for sale, the longest boating seasons, the most boat vendors, the largest boating communities and more. Millions of boating enthusiasts dream of owning property on a river, lake or ocean and living the ultimate American Dream - but boaters should always talk to a real estate agent before diving in to waterfront homeownership.

“There are a few things to keep in mind before buying a waterfront home, including the cost of flood insurance, the potential for flooding, dock permits and more,” said Cyndy Stewart, a Redfin real estate agent in Austin. “Also, if the water levels have been declining due to drought and overuse, your home might not be on the waterfront in 10 years - so research is critical before you buy.”

Based on the Redfin report, here are the top 10 best regions to live, work and play on the water:

1. Miami, Florida
2. Tampa, Florida
3. Minneapolis, Minnesota
4. Virginia Beach, Virginia
5. Providence, Rhode Island
6. Long Island, New York
7. Baltimore/Annapolis, Maryland
8. Chicago, Illinois
9. Seattle, Washington
10. Austin, Texas

Those looking for homes for sale on the waterfront can use a special search function on Redfin.com. The first step is to search for homes for sale in a particular city, then select the “more options” link, and then check the “waterfront” box, which will narrow down the search results to homes on the water.

For additional insights on this report, including the percentage of listings and median sales price of homes on a waterfront, the number of months with a mean temperature of over 60 degrees, the number of boat dealers and registrations per state, specific areas with the most waterfront property per city, and Redfin agent perspectives for each of these top 10 cities, please visit: http://blog.redfin.com/blog/2014/08/best-cities-for-boaters.html.

Methodology

Redfin data scientists evaluated 35 major metropolitan areas for this report. To find the percentage of waterfront property in each region, the brokerage looked at home sales from July 2011 through June 2014, and compared the number of waterfront listings with the number of listings not on the water. Redfin also pulled sales information during that timeframe to find the median sale price of waterfront homes. Discover Boating, a public awareness effort managed by the National Marine Manufacturers Association, provided the data on boat registrations and dealers by state. Weather.com provided the data on the mean temperatures per month. Each of these elements was given a score of 1-10 and then the cities were ranked based on an average of that score.
