CH2M HILL Proud Contributors to Government's New Railway Engineering Design Technician Apprenticeship Standard

LONDON--()--CH2M HILL welcomes today’s announcement by the Minister of State for Skills and Equalities, Nick Boles MP, on the publication of the new Railway Engineering Design Technician Apprenticeship standard following strong demand from the engineering and construction sector to increase apprentice numbers.

CH2M HILL was one of the leading companies involved in the development of this new Apprenticeship standard, working closely with the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium (TAC), to help shape these new requirements. The employer-led development of the new standards aims to bring more young people into the engineering sector and address the growing need for skilled technicians and engineers on rail infrastructure projects.

The new apprenticeship, which will typically last 36 months, will see each person achieve their Level 3 Apprenticeship and become Eng Tech qualified – an essential requirement to pursue long-term careers in engineering. As part of this initiative the government today also launched the ‘Get In, Go Far’ campaign to highlight the opportunities apprenticeships offer to young people as an exciting career path, using real apprentices to share thoughts and experiences across social media platforms.

CH2M HILL has been a leader in its sector on apprenticeships and is one of the six original members of the Technician Apprenticeship Consortium (TAC). Since its creation in 2010, CH2M HILL has played an active role in the consortium, providing apprenticeship opportunities on major programmes the company is working on, including Crossrail, HS2 and Thames Tideway Tunnel.

Speaking following the announcement of the new Apprenticeship standard, Nick Boles MP, Minister of State for Skills and Equalities, said: “I’m delighted that CH2M HILL has developed a new Apprenticeship standard in Railway Engineering Design.

“Since 2010 there have been 1.8 million apprenticeship starts and CH2M HILL are leading by example in the development and delivery of high quality apprenticeships that give people the chance of successful careers and help businesses get the skills they need to grow.”

Karen Hoad, from CH2M HILL and industry chair of the Railway Engineering Design Technician Trailblazer Apprenticeship group, who played an active role in helping develop these new standards said: “I am delighted CH2M HILL has been involved in the development of the Railway Engineering Design Technician Apprenticeship. The trailblazer scheme is enabling talented young people to develop the professional qualifications required for a career in the engineering sector whilst playing a vital role in plugging the skills gap that is present in the UK's engineering workforce today.

“The Railway Engineering Design Technician Apprenticeship provides apprentices with a professional qualification and the ability to pursue a long career in a growing, exciting sector whilst employers to maintain a strong, diverse workforce and help build the next generation of engineers."
