Goodwin Procter Names Michael Caplan as Chief Operating Officer

NEW YORK--()--Goodwin Procter LLP, an AmLaw 50 firm, announced today that Michael R. Caplan has been selected to succeed Arthur W. Greenberg as the firm’s chief operating officer effective August 18. Greenberg will be retiring from the firm on October 31.

As COO, Caplan will manage Goodwin Procter’s business, financial and administrative operations, and focus on the firm’s growth strategy and execution. He will report to the firm’s managing partner and serve as an ex-officio member of its Management and Executive Committees.

“Mike’s background and experience are unique in the world of traditional law firm chief operations officers,” said Goodwin Procter Chairman Regina M. Pisa. “In a rapidly evolving industry, we believe that someone with broad cross-industry perspective will be best positioned to innovate and contribute new ideas. Mike brings this perspective along with a solid understanding of law firm economics and operations.”

Caplan has served as the Global Chief Operating Officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies’ Corporate Legal, Risk and Compliance Department since February 2011. There, he managed day-to-day operations for the legal department, overseeing all Marsh & McLennan’s operating companies, including 140 attorneys. The department was recognized in 2013 by the Association for Corporate Counsel for its approach to creating value through technology, convergence and value-based fee arrangements. The Association in 2012 also named it “Litigation Department of the Year” and “Best IP Department.”

“Mike is highly credentialed and an excellent manager of both operations and people,” said Robert S. Insolia, managing partner at Goodwin Procter. “He will join a strong senior management group at Goodwin Procter and we are excited to have him on our team.”

Previously, Caplan held operations and technology management roles in the financial services industry for over two decades, including positions at Bank of America, The Goldman Sachs Group and JP Morgan & Co. He received his master’s degree in accounting from American University in 1993.

Caplan will work closely with Greenberg over the next few months as he transitions into his new role. Greenberg has served as the firm’s Chief Operating Officer since 2004 after being initially hired as Executive Director in 1996.

Greenberg retires from Goodwin Procter after over 18 years of overseeing the firm’s business operations. During his tenure at the firm, annual revenue grew from $106 million to more than $750 million while the number of attorneys expanded from 290 to 850.

“Arthur played a critical role in laying the foundation and building the infrastructure as Goodwin Procter transitioned from a primarily local, Boston-based organization into a national and then global law firm,” Pisa said. “He helped instill fiscal discipline that has allowed us, unlike many other law firms, to weather tough markets and seize opportunities to realize our vision. Arthur’s ability to scale the support for our growing operation has been a key component of our success.”
