4 Gold Medals Awarded on the First Day of the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games

NANJING, China--()--The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) got off to a rousing start early in the morning at the Xuanwu Lake Triathlon Venue on August 17 when Brittany Dutton (Australia) won the first gold medal of the Games in the Women's Individual Triathlon. The 17-year-old made a bold move during the cycling leg to pull ahead of the competition and complete the course with a winning time of 59 minutes and 56 seconds. Stephanie Jenks (USA) took the silver and Emilie Morier (France) the bronze in the event.

In a day full of firsts for the Nanjing 2014 YOG, the host country China also won its first gold medal at 2:30p.m. when 16-year-old Jiang Huihua won the Women’s 48kg Class Weightlifting event at the Nanjing International Expo Centre Stadium with her combined lift of 183kg. China took home a second gold medal in weightlifting later in the day when Meng Cheng (China) set a world youth record in the Men’s 56kg Weightlifting competition by successfully lifting 155kg in the clean and jerk.

The first day of the Games also saw 11 more gold medals awarded five other sports. In Judo, Bauyrzhan Zhauyntayev (Kazakhstan) won the gold in the Men’s -55kg category, Melisa Cakmakli (Turkey) in the Women’s -44kg, and Abe Hifumi (Japan) in the Men’s -66kg. In Fencing, Ivan Ilin (Russia) solidified his status as a top male sabre fencer among cadets with his gold medal while Sabrina Massialas (USA) took home gold in the Women’s Foil event. Agata Nowak (Poland) became a YOG gold medalist in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the Fengshan Shooting Hall while the Olympic Sports Centre Natatorium hosted gold medal ceremonies in swimming for Mykhailo Romanchuk (Ukraine) in the Men’s 400m Freestyle, Vien Nguyen (Vietnam) in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley and China in the Mixed 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay. In Taekwondo, Mahdi Eshaghi (Iran) picked up the first 2014 YOG gold medal for Iran the Men's Taekwondo-48kg final at the Nanjing International Expo Centre.
