New Insights From Resonate: 64 percent of Americans Agree Human Activities Have a Hand in Climate Change, but Candidates Must Connect Environment to Larger Platform Issues to Move Voters

Voters Rank Issues Such as Healthcare and Job Creation Higher than Environmental Policy

RESTON, Va.--()--Resonate, the only company that empowers political campaigns and issue advocacy organizations to act on why people make decisions, today released new insights on public perception of the cause of global warming and climate change. Results of Resonate’s national survey found that 30 percent believe it is primarily a manmade problem, while 34 percent think both human and natural forces are at fault. The balance is made up of a combination of those who believe climate change is a natural occurrence, non-believers, and those uncertain of its cause.

Of the 64 percent of Americans who believe human interaction plays a hand in the climate issue, it is not the leading platform issue that informs their voting decision. The top issues that drive candidate support for this group are healthcare (56%), job creation (50%), and entitlement programs (41%). However, alternative energy exploration is their leading public policy concern, with 30 percent calling it a key issue.

“Connecting on core platform issues such as healthcare, jobs and entitlements means winning on smaller or secondary issues such as climate change,” said Bryan Gernert, Resonate CEO. “There’s no voter file or poll that can connect those dots. Our job is to help campaigns find the intersection of issues and motivations in order to amplify meaningful messages through targeted digital outreach strategies that ultimately engage voters.”

The survey was conducted May 27-June 9, 2014 and represents a national sample of 2,407 respondents.
