FOLSOM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The advisory committee formed in May by the California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO) Board of Directors to help develop a governance structure for the western regional real-time energy market held its first meeting today and unanimously nominated Rebecca Wagner, Commissioner, Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, as its Chair. The nomination is subject to confirmation by the ISO Board, which is expected to address the item during its July 15-16 meeting.
The Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) Transitional Committee is composed of nine representatives independently nominated by regional industry stakeholders and two EIM participants, PacifiCorp and NV Energy. It will make recommendations to the ISO Board to put into place a long-term governance structure, which is expected to take about eighteen months.
“With today’s meeting, the Transitional Committee begins the work to create a governance structure that is fair, transparent and inclusive of a wide range of stakeholders,” said Steve Berberich, ISO President and CEO. “The Transitional Committee is composed of regional and professional diversities, which will help make the EIM a truly western market and encourage broad participation.”
The EIM enables utilities to procure energy in other utility service territories to fulfill last minute supply and demand needs. This allows more integration of renewable resources, such as solar and wind power into their systems. The increased geographic diversity also means utilities can pool resources and reduce their reserves, which is expensive. The EIM economic study shows the real-time market can generate savings of $21 million to $129 million annually.
Besides nominating their chair, the committee organized itself, received a briefing on ISO policies and set a calendar for future activities. The Committee general sessions are open to the public.
The EIM will go live on October 1 with its first participant, Portland-based PacifiCorp and will cover six western states.
