LONG BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SCAN Health Plan announced today the top-performing medical groups in its provider network for 2014. The nine medical groups honored each achieved an average of 4 stars or higher on SCAN’s internal quality metrics, which include a focus on preventive screenings, treatment of chronic conditions, and appropriate documentation to ensure that members get the care they need.

The medical groups that received the top honors are all located in Southern California and combined serve approximately 42 percent of SCAN’s total membership. The top-performing medical groups are: Facey Medical Foundation, Greater Newport Physicians, HealthCare Partners, MemorialCare Medical Foundation, Monarch HealthCare, Primary Care Associates Medical Group, Riverside Medical Clinic, Scripps Health, and St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare.

SCAN’s internal quality metrics for physician groups are similar to the CMS Star Rating System for health plans. Under that system CMS ranks health plans on a one- to five-star basis, weighing such factors as clinical outcomes, access to preventive services such as screenings and vaccines, managing chronic conditions, preventive care, and consumer satisfaction.
