SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--()--Concussions are not limited to just the football field. With recent studies indicating girls’ soccer ranks second behind football in concussions suffered by high school athletes1, Scottsdale Soccer’s Blackhawks Competitive Program is implementing the Play It Safe Concussion Care℠ Program developed by Wells Fargo Insurance, part of Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC). The unique program provides medical expense benefits to athletes who sustain a covered head injury thru excess insurance coverage designed to help protect the financial well-being of the athletes and their families.

By offering the Play It Safe Concussion Care Program, Scottsdale Soccer’s Blackhawks Competitive Program will now be able to provide an insurance policy that covers each player, ensuring access to a concussion care specialist post injury, if needed.

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all of our players,” said Brad Clement, vice president of Scottsdale Soccer’s Blackhawks Competitive Program. “We’re excited to bring this opportunity to our players and work with Wells Fargo Insurance as we collectively strive to protect our youth athletes.”

According to the American Journal of Sports Medicine, an estimated 300,000 sports-related concussions occur annually. The report says that 47 percent of concussions resulted from participation in football followed by 8.2 percent in girls’ soccer. 55.3 percent of athletes returned to play within three weeks of the injury, and 22.8 percent returned in less than a week.

The Play It Safe Concussion Care Program covers all Blackhawks Competitive Program athletes, which provides excess insurance for proper treatment of concussion injuries. As a result of the program, more players can access qualified, cost effective professional help and guidance on their return to play decision.

“The Play It Safe Program will further help Scottsdale Soccer in their mission to develop youth athletes’ with a valuable concussion care program,” said John Breckenridge, senior vice president of Wells Fargo’s Student Insurance Division. “With care and protocol similar to those afforded to professional athletes, we can help ensure young athletes safely return to an activity they enjoy.”
