SAN FRANCISCO--()--Librato, the cloud-based platform that puts the Zen into monitoring, is announcing the release of composite metrics, a powerful new capability that lets users derive rapid insights from the data they are collecting. Librato’s composite metrics make it possible to specify complex queries against real-time metrics, allowing users to compare, transform and aggregate them, in the same way that data-query languages enable the mining of data in a database or data warehouse.

“Data is only as valuable as the actionable insights you can surface from it,” said Joseph Ruscio, CTO and co-founder of Librato. “Composite metrics enable our users to define and save complex, custom analyses on their metrics and visualize the results. They’re a big step forward for operations teams, helping them to find the answers they need and quickly respond to any situation.”

Using composite metrics it is possible to perform analyses on existing “raw” data streams and visualize the result, in real-time, on instruments and dashboards, precluding the need for off-line calculations and giving immediate insight in the status of the operation being monitored.

"Since we began using Librato over a year ago, we've made it the focal point for visualizing the operations that help to drive our business,” said Weston Jossey, devOps manager of Tapjoy. “Composite metrics was another great piece in the puzzle for us, especially when looking into how we are performing against historic metrics."

Librato’s monitoring platform is dedicated to helping development and operations teams discover latent or changing conditions at the earliest possible time and minimize the time required to find and remediate the root cause before it impacts service. Composite metrics provides a powerful tool in fulfilling this mission, making it possible to directly visualize sophisticated queries that span multiple inputs.

"With data streaming in from different applications, with different semantics, from ephemeral infrastructure, we need to be able to quickly adapt our interpretation of the data as problems and opportunities arise, ” said Rhodri Pugh, principal developer of Scottish American. “In the highly competitive insurance industry, we're finding that composite metrics gives us the powerful and flexible language we need to rapidly diagnose and capitalize on the varied data our systems constantly provide."
