WASHINGTON--()--In 2013, the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) launched their KEY Pledge campaign, a program aimed at increasing education and awareness for safe handling and usage of single-load liquid laundry packets. Today, ACI announced that the program has garnered more than 39,000 pledges since launching 10 months ago for consumers to “Be the KEY” to a safe laundry room and routine. This nationwide call-to-action secured support from all 50 states with the highest engagement from residents in California, Florida and Texas.

Additionally, ACI announced the first-ever KEY Pledge sweepstakes winner, Cynthia Moreno of Harlingen, Texas. “We are incredibly grateful for the support from Cynthia along with the other consumers who joined us this past year to help champion our mission,” said Nancy Bock, ACI Senior Vice President of Education. “As we continue to roll out year two of the KEY Pledge campaign, we look forward to continue raising awareness among parents and caregivers of the potential dangers laundry packets pose, along with educating them about proper safety precautions to help prevent laundry packet accidents. Cynthia is the recipient of a *$2,500 gift card that can be used towards a laundry room makeover. Additionally, we were excited that Cynthia was from Texas, one of the top ranked states on our heat map in most KEY Pledges taken to date,” added Bock.

“I cannot believe that I am the winner of the KEY Pledge 2013 campaign sweepstakes,” said Cynthia Moreno. “As a Family and Consumer Sciences educator, I know the importance and value of teaching consumers how to store and use liquid laundry packets the right way. I have been an educator for many years and I know that this campaign can help prevent accidents from happening.”

The KEY Pledge campaign, which launched in June 2013, is a multi-platform educational program aimed at raising broad awareness about the potential hazards laundry packets can pose to young children if not safely stored out of reach and sight and in their original container or pouch. If proper procedures are not followed, incidents such as accidental ingestion and eye exposure can occur. In fact, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC), more than 10,000 children five years and younger were accidentally exposed to laundry packets in 2013.

These laundry-related incidents are entirely preventable with the proper education. To further teach parents and caregivers about the safety issues, and properly arm them with the necessary safety information and guidelines for liquid laundry packets, ACI is asking the public to continue to take the KEY Pledge:

  • Keep single-load liquid laundry packets and containers out of sight and reach of children
  • Educate your family and friends about the safe use and storage of this laundry product
  • You serve a key role in laundry safety

Consumers can take the KEY Pledge online and invite family and friends to do the same. Those taking the pledge can also track how they are making a difference through a “heat map” that allows them to follow pledge tallies in their home state and across the nation. Moreover, in 2014, consumers will also have the opportunity to enter and win a $2,500 gift card to help ensure their laundry room and routine are as safe as possible.
