LEITRIM, Ireland--()--Ireland’s Leitrim Tourism has teamed up with Peterborough, a city in Canada, to promote their respective tourism offerings to both Irish and Canadian tourists. The aim of the initiative is to promote the waterways that they both offer and to boost visitors from Canada to Leitrim during 2014. The initiative includes trade shows, advertising and closer links with tourism agencies in Canada.

There are striking similarities between the two Leitrim and Canada, particularly Peterborough, which are dominated by stunning waterways and boating activities. Leitrim, known as the marina capital of Ireland, boasts an array of tourist facilities around the river Shannon. Likewise, Peterborough is a city on the Otonabee River in central Ontario, Canada, 125 kilometres northeast of Toronto and is famed for its local waterways, in particular the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Welcoming the initiative, Canadian Ambassador to Ireland, Loyola Hearn, who visited Leitrim, said “Ireland and Canada have worked closely together over recent years to build on its strong relationship. In recent months, airlines have announced new routes offering affordable flights from Canada to Ireland in under four hours. I have no doubt that such announcements will increase visitor numbers to both countries. In my view Leitrim and Peterborough’s similarities are a real attraction and offer exceptional facilities to water enthusiasts. I’m delighted to be here to mark the 20th anniversary and look forward to further developing this relationship.”

Also commenting, Sinead Mc Dermott Leitrim Tourism officer said “We are very excited to announce this initiative between Leitrim and Peterborough. Both places have many similarities particularly the Waterways and the influence they have had on both areas. Our target for 2014 is to put an extra emphasis on developing Canadian ties and we hope to boost the amount of Canadian visitors to Leitrim by the end of the year.”
