Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU) Announces 3rd Annual Art Competition; Local Students in Grades 3-5 Compete During National Financial Literacy Month

Art contest highlights PFCU’s commitment to teach Philadelphia-area students to establish and maintain healthy financial habits

PHILADELPHIA--()--Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU) today announced its 3rd annual art competition will begin on April 1, 2014, to coincide with the first day of National Financial Literacy Month. PFCU’s “Picture of Success Art Contest” will be open to Philadelphia-area students in grades 3-5 and is designed to teach children how to establish and maintain healthy financial habits. Each student will submit a work of art that depicts one of their financial goals, and winners of the contest will receive prizes for their entire classroom, along with a personal $100 savings account. The deadline to submit entries is May 7, 2014.

National Financial Literacy Month takes place each April, promoting the importance of financial literacy and establishing good financial practices. In 2012, PFCU began an art competition designed to prompt conversations between teachers, parents and young people about the importance of learning and practicing good financial habits at an early age. Since that time, more than 40 Philadelphia-area schools have participated. As part of the program this year, PFCU’s Financial Educator will visit local classrooms during the month of April to give a hands-on lesson that will teach students how to create and maintain a budget, which is the foundation to achieving financial goals.

“Teaching young people about the basics of money is one of the most important lessons parents and teachers will instill in children,” said Dominique Jenkins, Financial Educator at Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. “We want to make saving fun, and what better way to do that than create an art contest that literally paints the picture of success. One of our goals at PFCU is to ensure that young people learn the skills necessary to have a positive relationship with money for years to come, and we’re so excited to see the artwork these students create.”

All Philadelphia-area students in grades 3-5 are eligible to participate, regardless of membership at PFCU. Once all entries are submitted on May 7, 2014, a special committee will select six finalists. On May 15, 2014, the artwork from the six finalists will be posted on PFCU’s Facebook page for the public to vote on through May 30, 2014. Two winners will be announced on PFCU’s Facebook page on May 30, 2014.

“Philadelphia Federal Credit Union is committed to giving young people the tools and knowledge they need about money all year long so they can grow to become fiscally responsible adults, but National Financial Literacy Month always reenergizes and refocuses that commitment,” said James McAneney, president and CEO of Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. “We’re looking forward to teaching students about budgeting and other skills that will serve them well for their entire lives.”
