The annual Florida AIDS Walk and Music Festival benefitting South Florida HIV/AIDS service providers will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2014 on Fort Lauderdale Beach. The fundraising 5K walk and subsequent concert – which will be opened by nationally syndicated radio personality Elvis Duran alongside his Morning Show cohorts Bethany and Uncle Johnny, and headlined by 1980s pop icons The Go-Go’s – is hosted by leading global nonprofit AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and presented by AHF Pharmacy, where 96 cents of every dollar earned supports US & global HIV/AIDS care.

The day of fun and philanthropy will also include a contest that will see one lucky person winning a brand new midnight blue 2013 Vespa LX 50 scooter. A winner will be announced after the Walk, just before The Go-Go’s take the stage (contest rules available at www.FloridaAIDSWalk.org).

“South Florida is a united, empowered community battling one of the nation’s highest HIV/AIDS rates with the help of tireless nonprofit organizations. We are proud to help raise awareness and funding through this fun day of events so that this lifesaving work can continue,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AHF.

A March 2013 fact sheet on the ‘HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the United States’ published by the Kaiser Family Foundation notes that Florida reported the second highest number of new HIV cases nationwide in 2011. According to the Florida Department of Health’s January 2014 Monthly Surveillance Report, Broward County saw 1,043 new HIV infections in 2013, as well as 498 new AIDS diagnoses, which contribute to Florida’s statewide 2013 totals of 5,916 new HIV cases and 3,279 new AIDS cases. As of December 31, 2013, the department estimated that 104,181 Floridians were living with HIV/AIDS.

The 5k procession begins and ends at Fort Lauderdale’s South Beach Park and will be followed by a live concert headlined by pop icons The Go-Go’s. The walk is sponsored primarily by AHF Pharmacy, a national chain of full-service pharmacies whose proceeds fund AHF’s global work providing HIV/AIDS treatment, testing, and advocacy in 32 countries around the world.

Local nonprofits benefitting from the funds raised through walk registrations include SunServe, Latinos Salud, Broward House, the Poverello Center, The Pride Center at Equality Park, the Positive Young People Foundation, and AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

“These organizations keep every penny of every dollar they raise themselves through sponsoring teams of Walkers in addition to receiving a donation from organizers of the Walk to help support their individual missions serving the community of people living with HIV in South Florida,” said Mark Martin, AHF’s Regional Director of Community Relations and Development in Florida, who plans the event each year.
