TORONTO--()--Following January’s astonishing records, TransCore Link Logistics Canadian Freight Index had another notable month. February’s total load volumes dipped slightly by five percent compared to January; however, February had fewer shipping days. As a daily average, loads for February were four percent higher than in January.

February had its highest year-over-year increase ever, an impressive 60 percent. This surpassed the previous February record set in 2010 with a 55 percent increase year-over-year after Canada’s recovery from the 2009 recessionary period.

Cross-border postings averaged 71 percent of total load volumes.

  • Cross-border loads originating in Canada destined to the United States jumped significantly by 83 percent year-over-year.
  • Cross-border loads originating in the United States destined for provinces within Canada climbed by 59 percent year-over-year.

Intra-Canada load volumes represented 24 percent of the total volumes for February and increased considerably by 40 percent compared to the same period last year.

Equipment postings decreased in February and were the lowest levels for the last 34 months. Posted trucks decreased nine percent month-over-month and dropped by 17 percent year-over-year. The equipment-to-load ratio continued its decline in February to 1.31 from 1.36 in the previous month. This number demonstrated a 93 percent improvement from last year’s drop in February. The truck–to-load ratio is the lowest on record since TransCore Link Logistics started recording data. This trend indicates continued tightening of available capacity.

Information within the freight index includes all domestic, cross-border and interstate data submitted by Loadlink’s Canadian-based customers.
