Two Taiwanese Literary Masters to Be Commemorated With Special Exhibit at NCKU

TAINAN, Taiwan--()--A special exhibition is currently open to the public at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, in recognition of Chen Chih-Fan and Shih-Tao Yeh and their significant contribution to Taiwan with achievement in literature.

The exhibit featuring their achievement in Taiwanese literature and the time they spent at NCKU is co-organized by NCKU and Tainan City Government. It is now held at NCKU Museum of History and will run through June 30.

The opening ceremony hosted by NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung took place on February 22nd at NCKU History Museum. Many distinguished guests attended the ceremony including Tunghai University President Ming-Jer Tang and Deputy Mayor of Tainan City Her-Jiun Sheu.

Chen is an internationally renowned scientist who is also a very fine essayist. Yeh, on the other hand, is a Tainan-born Taiwanese writer and historian who has played a crucial role in Taiwanese literary criticism.

Both Chen and Yeh as key figures in Taiwanese literature have had substantial impact on the development of literature in Taiwan and great influence on students since both of them were the teachers at NCKU for a very long period of time.

According to President Hwung, even though the educational background of Chen and Yeh are very different they both obtain love for literature.

“We’re honored to have them both teach in NCKU. Chen was the Visiting Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering while Yeh had been a teacher at the Department of Taiwanese Literature for many years,” President Hwung said.

“By showcasing the artifacts, manuscripts and publications of these two literary giants, the exhibition is expected to represent the diversity in Taiwanese literature and to usher a literary feast for Tainan citizens,” said Ching-Hui Chao, the director-general of the Department of Information and International Relations at Tainan City Government.

In addition to the exhibit, campus tours to visit the two writers’ favorite spots in campus and learn about their perspectives on life and art will be organized.

A total of two tours are scheduled on March 22 and April 26 respectively. People who are interested in the visit are welcome to sign up.
