LONDON--()--We have recently designed and built two large dedicated Vindon walk-in rooms for a major Biopharmaceutical client at our Source BioScience Rochdale storage facility (previously Vindon Scientific) with timings almost unheard of in the Biopharma sector. The two Vindon walk-in rooms have been installed, commissioned and validated to provide -25ºC storage all within five weeks!

This project came hot on the heels of the provision of a suite of Vindon stability storage rooms, incorporating unique lighting on each shelf, for a major Pharmaceutical company.

Our understanding of the regulations required to undertake the storage of biosimilars at tightly controlled conditions in a secure GMP compliant environment made Source BioScience the natural choice for this prestigious project as we demonstrated our understanding of the co-ordinated management of a large GMP bulk drug storage suite.

A testing brief

Our client has been developing biosimilar programs and manufacturing the relevant drug substance and drug product for the purpose of clinical trials.

Biosimilars or (follow-on biologics) are terms used to describe officially approved subsequent versions of innovator biopharmaceutical products made by a different sponsor following patent and exclusivity expiry on the innovator product. Biosimilar medicines are intended to have the same mechanism of action as the original biological medicines, and are designed to treat the same diseases as the innovator’s product.

Designed for the future

Vindon walk-in freezer rooms have a volumetric capacity of 20m³ and use a DX R404a refrigeration system. These use two semi-hermitic compressor condensing units to cool the freezer room and incorporate two evaporators to achieve sufficient air distribution. Dual refrigeration systems allow for 100% standby in the event of one system failing, or when one system is defrosting. Each system is capable of operating the freezer at -25°C.

The total heat of rejection is handled by air cooled condensers as befits equipment of this nature making a system which is robust and as economical to operate as possible.

Vindon walk-in rooms are used in a wide range of controlled environment conditions and Source BioScience offer Pharma and Biopharma storage services at their facilities in the UK, USA and Ireland.
