Project Phoenix, a NY-based non-profit foundation dedicated to improving the lives of children worldwide through athletic programs and the introduction of sports infrastructure into their communities, is proud to announce that Jozy Altidore of the United States National Men’s soccer team has joined its advisory board. Altidore joins a distinguished panel of advisors including NBC Sports’ Bob Costas, former United States House of Representatives Majority Leader Dick Gephardt and former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Dennis Hastert.
Project Phoenix’s inaugural project, Phoenix Stadium, will be a 12,000-seat soccer and athletic facility for the people of Cite Soleil, Haiti. Ravaged by the 2010 earthquake, Cite Soleil is currently designated a United Nations Red Zone and urgently requires a source of economic development. The children and young adults who represent the majority of Cite Soleil’s population are in need of a source of hope and inspiration, a cause that is particularly close to Altidore’s heart.

This summer, Altidore will enter into his second career FIFA World Cup on the US National team. This year’s draw pits Team USA against a particularly strong group of challengers – including the national teams from Germany, Portugal and Ghana – but Altidore’s past performance, passion and growth have him poised to lead a successful Team USA in 2014.

In addition to serving as a world-class professional athletic facility, Project Phoenix will house a soccer academy, an elementary and middle school and youth dormitories. Through the ingenious design of world-renowned architect Carlos Zapata, the grounds will be landscaped with gardens for farming and will include a garbage composting and recycling plant and a small lake containing tilapia for community use. This self-sustaining community will effectively establish the Stadium as an economic and social focal point for the city and a source of pride for its residents.
