ABC Laboratories and University of Missouri Announce Internship Program

COLUMBIA, Mo.--()--The University of Missouri Department of Biochemistry and ABC Laboratories have announced a joint initiative to offer science majors first-hand work experience in private industry. The MU Department of Biochemistry will offer a 5-credit course titled Biochemistry 4001—Industry Internship. ABC scientists will participate in course lectures and the company will offer paid internships to interns selected for the program.

ABC President and CEO, John Bucksath, said the program is one way the growing company can cultivate the next wave of ABC employees. “So many students pursuing an education in life sciences think of academia or medicine as their only career paths,” he said. “In fact, there is a tremendous demand for scientific brainpower in private industry.” ABC is a contract research organization that provides product development services to heavily regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

Chris Lee, Ph.D., Assistant Teaching Professor with MU’s Department of Biochemistry, “This internship opportunity presents a chance for our students to explore a career in the biotech industry while working to finish their degree. Hopefully this experience provides the technical training along with the theoretical background in science to make our students competitive hires at ABC or related biotech companies.”

Applications for the internships for the spring and summer semesters of 2014 were accepted (timeframe); four internships have been awarded to the following University of Missouri Biochemistry students: Alexandra Diller, Matt Mosior, Tao Wei, and Keith Maestras.
