New Take on Classic Favorites (Graphic: Business Wire)

NEW YORK--()--As shoppers flock to retailers’ websites to take advantage of Cyber Monday deals, data released today from Panjiva, the B2B platform powering the business of global trade, provides insight into the toys that may be in their shopping carts today and in the weeks to come: new variations of classic toys. The 1980s video game Tetris is the toy seeing the greatest revival thanks to a new, jointly-branded version of the popular wood block game, Jenga. In fact, shipments of Tetris goods—many of which represent the new tower game—from August through October have increased nine-fold compared to the same three-month period in 2012. August through October are the months when most holiday shipments arrive at U.S. ports in order to be at retailers in time for the holiday sales push.

In the months leading up to the holiday season, several toy manufacturers are trying to capture the hearts of American children and a portion of their parents’ wallet share by introducing updated or enhanced versions of their classic offerings. Retailers appear to approve of this strategy, as all of these brands have experienced an increase in shipments compared to previous years. Most notably:

  • Barbie continues to be a perennial top toy. This year, thanks in part to the introduction of its Mariposa doll, Barbie had 2,441 total shipments, up 6 percent over the 2012 holiday period
  • Since the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996, the furry red monster is regularly a top toy favorite. With the addition of Big Hugs Elmo this year, shipments are up 37 percent (344 in total)
  • Despite being the “must-have” toy of the 1998 holiday season, Furby saw extremely limited shipments from 2007, when Panjiva first began tracking shipment data, to 2011, and 180 last year. Thanks to the launch of Furby Boom heading into the 2013 holiday season, it’s making a comeback: shipments are up 53 percent, to 276 total shipments of the owl-like robotic toy this year.
