Perot Museum of Nature and Science and Samsung Unveil Phase One of Mobile Technology Platform with Innovative 3-Year Partnership

State-of-the-art digital enhancements extend learning and interactions through Samsung Tab® 3 8.0 with exhibits at Perot Museum

DALLAS--()--Already known for its high level of interactivity, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science today announced a three-year technology partnership with Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC (Samsung Mobile) that will further extend the onsite visitor learning experience through development of the Museum’s first-ever onsite mobile strategy.

With a kick-off planned for Thanksgiving weekend, the Museum will have more than 500 Galaxy Tab® 3 8.0 – donated by Samsung Mobile – available free of charge initially for the 50,000-plus Perot Museum member households to enjoy digitally-driven activities and games in English and Spanish. Using the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, visitors can simulate the conditions of a hurricane or earthquake, feed a dinosaur, learn about parts of the body, and more. And to make the experience more personal, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 will offer ways for guests to share their experience with other Museum visitors and to create customized pdf takeaways to remember their experience.

Phase One of the partnership will provide a digital visitor’s guide and interactive experiences on the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 to highlight and enhance popular exhibits within three of the Museum’s permanent halls – the Being Human Hall with The Human Body exhibit on Level 2, The Rees-Jones Foundation Dynamic Earth Hall with the Extreme Earth exhibit on Level 3, and the T. Boone Pickens Life Then and Now Hall with the Alamosaurus fossil on Level 4. Phase One will roll out to Perot Museum members Thanksgiving weekend and to the general public in early December.

An added facet of the new mobile strategy is a bilingual component – which, for Phase One, is in Spanish, with more languages to come.

“Samsung’s partnership is unique in that they’ve not only committed to fund this project but they’re providing the equipment, spearheading the design and overseeing the implementation,” said Nicole G. Small, Eugene McDermott Chief Executive Officer. “We’re so excited that this three-year plan, once fully implemented, will provide a richer educational experience with bilingual content for our visitors.”

The preliminary content seen today is a preview of what is to come, and additional digital enhancements will be developed over the course of the three-year partnership. The digital software was commissioned by Samsung Mobile and developed by NOUS Guide.

“At Samsung, we share a common vision with the Perot Museum of Nature and Science to enrich people’s lives and inspire communities through science and technology,” said Gregory Lee, president of Samsung Telecommunications America. “We want the digital technology and activities on the Galaxy Tab to boost curiosity and motivate visitors of all ages to continue learning.”

Visitors may check out the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 (one per family) at the Samsung kiosk located in the main lobby by leaving a valid driver’s license.

In-House Digital Exhibit Enhancements

Through custom software, interactive activities were designed so visitors can extend their learning and interaction with the exhibits in the museum. Three exhibit enhancements will be available upon Phase One launch – The tablets can be used on Level 2 in the Being Human Hall with The Human Body exhibit, on Level 3 in The Rees-Jones Foundation Dynamic Earth Hall with the Extreme Earth exhibit, and on Level 4 in the T. Boone Pickens Life Then and Now Hall with the Alamosaurus fossil.

Visitor’s Guide App

To help eliminate waste of paper guides and to help visitors plan their visit in advance, a digital visitor’s app with museum navigation and general information was developed on the Android platform. The app content mirrors online content and the Perot Museum’s paper pamphlet. The app is available for download on Google Play and will operate both in the museum and offsite.
