San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts Joins Healthcare Finance, Communications and Operations Experts at Forum on New Value-Based Purchasing Paradigm at AMN Healthcare

‘It’s a Payer’s World: Commoncents Communication around Healthcare Pricing and VBP’—George Mason University Professor Jay Shiver keynotes, HFMA VP Rob Fromberg moderates, first joint meeting of Health Care Communicators of San Diego & Healthcare Financial Management Association

CHICAGO & SAN DIEGO & WASHINGTON--()--San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts, health policy advisor to two presidents, joins fellow healthcare experts at a special forum on healthcare pricing and value-based purchasing, Thursday, Oct. 24, at AMN Healthcare in San Diego. Co-hosted by Health Care Communicators of San Diego and the San Diego and Imperial Counties chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, “It’s a Payer’s World” will afford HCC and HFMA members and guests fresh perspectives on the healthcare pricing debate and the challenges posed by the shift to VBP,* and encourage collaborative strategies.

“This ‘Commoncents Communications forum represents the first time we’ve opened lines of communications with HFMA on these issues,” says HCC President Bobette Brown. “We’re so busy responding to media inquiries, promoting existing service lines and ‘putting heads in beds,’ that it’s hard to make time to create communications strategies that will align all our stakeholders around these challenges.” Brown works in marketing and public relations at Palomar Health in San Diego.

“Close collaboration between the communications and finance functions at healthcare organizations is critical to delivering clear, common-sense information to patients, families, communities and the media about the role of financial practices in the patient care process,” notes HFMA Vice President Robert Fromberg, who will fly in from Chicago to moderate the expert panel.

“Ultimately, clear communication on these issues is critical in creating community confidence and a positive experience for patients,” says Fromberg, editor-in-chief of HFMA’s Healthcare Financial Management journal and a former communications executive at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

Healthcare executive, educator, thought leader and consultant John M. (Jay) Shiver, MHA, LFACHE, FAAMA, will fly in from Washington to keynote.

“As public and private payers continue to create and expand upon programs that realign provider financial incentives, healthcare organizations are finding it’s no longer business as usual,” notes Shiver. “Medicare penalties for readmissions are just a summer shower compared to the tsunami of population health incentives coming. It’s critical that everyone in the organization understand the key measures, know what’s at risk, collaborate on strategies to deal with these challenges and be committed to executing on these strategies. Communication is key yet often organizations simply don’t foster appropriate dialogue.”

“We’re looking forward to learning a thing or two about communications from HCC as we share information about the current economics of healthcare,” adds HFMA Program Chair Aaron McDaniel, director of patient access services at El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Panelists include:

  • Nancy Goglin— Principal, MedCom … Goglin has held marketing and communications positions at Sharp HealthCare, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Premier and Pyxis (Cardinal Health).
  • Martha Ann “Marty” Knutson—Attorney and Counselor-at-law … Knutson was corporate compliance officer at Palomar Health, and VP and chief compliance officer at Stamford Hospital.
  • Gayle Sandhu, FACHE—Corporate Senior Director for Quality Assurance, Scripps Health (San Diego) … Sandhu serves on the board of the California Hospital Patient Safety Organization (CalHIPSO).
  • James Uli, MHA—Chief Financial Officer, Loma Linda Medical Center-Murrieta … Uli has a background in decision support and reimbursement, and was a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch.

Special Guest Panelist: Dave Roberts

San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts joins the forum as a special guest. An appointed health policy advisor to Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, Roberts earned national recognition for reducing costs and improving the delivery of Medicare, Medicaid and children’s health insurance coverage. He also worked for the US Air Force at the Pentagon and in Europe, and played a key role in developing Tricare, the military's health insurance system. A former HIMSS vice president for government relations, Roberts serves on the San Diego County Mental Health Board and the community board of Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. A former corporate VP at SAIC, Roberts was recently appointed to the National Association of Counties’ Health Steering Committee, which evaluates healthcare delivery financing and other issues.
