BATON ROUGE, La.--()--Last week, a Louisiana jury awarded $5.95 million to Mr. Sidney Mabile, a native Louisianan, after finding Dow Chemical responsible for his mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. As part of the trial, John Langdoc, a mesothelioma lawyer at Baron and Budd, discovered that Dow Chemical allegedly predicted that some portion of its employees and contract workers would get cancer, but that it would be more cost effective for Dow Chemical to continue using asbestos in its chemical manufacturing. Dow continues to use asbestos to this day.

Mr. Mabile was exposed to asbestos at the Dow Chemical Plaquemine facility, the largest chemical plant in Louisiana, where he worked as an electrician. Dow internal documents predicted in 1970 that a significant number of the company's workers were at risk for developing asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma, even workers who did not work directly with asbestos.

“Most chemical companies have long since abandoned using asbestos. Not Dow,” said Langdoc. “Dow continues to use the notorious carcinogen."

Dow has annual sales of roughly $60 billion and employees approximately 50,000 people worldwide. Asbestos continues to kill 3,000 people in the United States each year.
