BROOKLYN, N.Y.--()--BikeGuard, a free bike registry service, has been adopted by the Eastern Michigan University campus. The program officially began yesterday when the President of Eastern Michigan University, Susan Martin, registered her own bicycle.

BikeGuard is hosted by MyAssetTag, an online retailer that makes asset tags to identify bicycles in the case of theft or accident. The bicycles are catalogued by the numbers stamped onto stickers on the frames of registered bicycles. These stickers also feature Quick Response, or QR, codes. If a student suspects a bicycle has been stolen, the student can use a smartphone to scan the QR code and quickly identify the registered user.

CEO of MyAssetTag, Blair Brewster, said, “A bicycle is stolen every seven seconds in the United States. The purpose of BikeGuard is to help law enforcement officers by creating a simple method for bicycle identification in the case of loss or stolen property. The Eastern Michigan University student body will be able to assist the police in identifying and recovering stolen bicycles.”

Eastern Michigan University is home to more than 23,000 students. With over 800 acres and 120 buildings, Crime Prevention Coordinator, Candace Dorsey, is looking forward to the launch of the program. Candace Dorsey said, “We think the BikeGuard program is an excellent program and will be a tremendous aid for law enforcement. It will help us in the event bikes are stolen and we will have the ability to return the bikes to the owner.”

Eastern Michigan University is the first institution of higher learning to adopt BikeGuard campus-wide.
