McCarter & English Honored for its Diversity and Pro Bono Initiatives at Euromoney’s Americas Women in Business Law Awards 2013

NEW YORK--()--McCarter & English, LLP is pleased to announce that it has been named “Best National Firm for Diversity” and “Best National Firm for Pro Bono” by Euromoney Legal Media Group at its 2013 Americas Women in Business Law Awards. The firm received the two awards on June 5th at a ceremony held at the Essex House in New York City.

“At McCarter & English, diversity and inclusion are a priority,” said Stephanie Cohen, Partner-in-Charge of Firm-wide Diversity. “We are honored to have received this award in acknowledgement of our continuing efforts to ensure that we have an inclusive and supportive work environment for all of our employees.”

McCarter was recognized for its firm-wide diversity efforts based on several ongoing initiatives including its Women’s Initiative, a gross-up policy for LGBT employees, balanced hour and flex-time policies and other diversity efforts, including various partnerships with organizations that support diversity and inclusion efforts.

Emily Goldberg, McCarter’s Pro Bono Director, stated, “We are also thrilled to receive recognition for our pro bono activities and will remain steadfast in our goal to meet the needs of our growing and diverse communities. Using our legal expertise in this way not only makes us better lawyers but furthers our efforts to be change agents in our local neighborhoods.”

The firm engages in many pro bono initiatives connected to defending couples in same-sex marriages, immigration asylum cases as well as victims of domestic violence. Recently, attorneys represented the Connecticut Bar Association as amicus in Windsor v. U.S., the “Defense of Marriage Act” case in which the Second Circuit Court of Appeals held that DOMA is unconstitutional. The firm also worked closely with Immigration Equality to represent eight political asylum applicants who claimed asylum based on their LGBT and HIV status. In spring 2010, the Newark office launched a domestic violence project with Partners for Women and Justice, a non-profit organization that provides free legal help in NJ to low income, abused women in domestic violence and family law matters.

Euromoney LMG hosts its annual Americas Women in Business Law Awards, now in its second year, to honor law firms for their outstanding achievement in supporting the development of women in the legal profession and providing innovative work/life programs to enable women to pursue legal careers. The individual practice area awards recognize the best lawyer in each practice area. The firm awards celebrate the best initiatives for gender diversity, innovation, minority women, mentoring, work-life balance, pro bono work, talent management, as well as best in country/region.
