What’s a Mom Worth?

Salary.com Releases Average “Mom Salary” for both Working and Stay-at-Home Moms

WALTHAM, Mass.--()--With the country’s attention focused on high-profile working moms and Mother’s Day around the corner, Salary.com is taking a close look at the responsibilities of moms in the workplace and moms at home, asking the question – what’s a mom worth?

She’s worth more than she was last year, according to Salary.com’s latest survey. The average salary for stay-at-home moms – calculated based on what they would be paid if they were compensated for their work – rose by $624, while the average at-home salary for working moms rose by $457 over the last year.

“With more on their plate, mothers are working harder than before – both in the office and at home,” said Abby Euler, general manager at Salary.com. “Working moms are taking on two full-time jobs, and while no dollar amount can truly reflect the value of a mom, the mom salaries give us a sense of just how much they could bring home if they were compensated for their work in both roles.”

Using Salary.com’s Mom Salary Wizard, more than 6,000 moms quantified their hours by job description in order to compute the yearly average. Based on this data, Salary.com determined that the average stay-at-home mom juggles a 94-hour work week and a working mom manages 58 hours of work at home per week, in addition to the time she spends at work.

Taking into account overtime and using salary data provided by employers, an average stay-at-home mom’s 2013 total salary increased in one year from $112,962 to $113,586. A working mom’s at-home 2013 salary also increased from $66,979 to $67,436. A working mom’s at-home salary should be combined with her actual work salary in order to determine her yearly compensation.

This is the 13th consecutive year Salary.com’s Mom Salary Wizard has helped put a real dollar amount on all that moms do. The company collects data from actual mothers – both stay-at-home and working – to provide how many hours go into their mothering duties at home.

Moms and their families can visit Salary.com’s Mom Salary Wizard to calculate Mom’s salary and create a “mom paycheck” for Mother’s Day.
