UFCW Supports Walmart Workers in National Day of Action

Events on April 24 will urge CEO to fulfill his promise to fix schedule problems plaguing struggling families

What:	Participants will distribute handbills and deliver signed letters of support of Walmart employees to Walmart store managers.

Local Walmart employees and community supporters will join thousands across the country in calling on Walmart managers to publicly commit to immediately addressing the scheduling problems that leave many Walmart employees unable to care for their families and afford basic necessities like food and rent.

Last Black Friday, members of the Organization United for Respect (OUR Walmart) took action by going on strike to protest Walmart’s retaliation and attempts to silence workers who speak out for change. In addition to calling for the company to publicly commit to better labor rights and standards, one of the key concerns of OUR Walmart is the importance of flexible, consistent scheduling and adequate hours.

In January 2013, after speaking out about the issue for more than a year, OUR Walmart won a huge victory: Walmart U.S. president and CEO Bill Simon publicly announced that Walmart would provide more transparency in scheduling and offer part-time workers the opportunity to get the hours they desperately need. Unfortunately, employees report that Walmart has yet to make good on its public commitment to change.

In response, OUR Walmart members and their supporters in the community will come together to call on Walmart to fulfill its public commitment to workers. They have also relaunched a petition calling for the resignation of Walmart CEO Mike Duke.
