Professor Eugene Kandel to Present on Grid Parity in Israel at the Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Conference

Head of the National Economic Council to discuss governmental policies to encourage grid parity and the viability of renewable and alternative energies in Israel

Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy 2012

EILAT, Israel--()--The Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Initiative today announced today that the agenda for its 5th International Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Conference & Exhibition will include a keynote presentation from Prof. Eugene Kandel on the Israeli government’s policy on grid parity for encouraging the viability of renewable and alternative energies in Israel.

Prof. Kandel will present the results of a government appointed, inter-ministerial committee, which he led and was formed to estimate the overall benefits of various renewable and alternative energy technologies in Israel. Prof. Kandel will discuss at the conference this committee's efforts to establish new forms of regulation and policymaking to encourage the competitiveness of renewable and alternative energy sources in Israel compared to conventional forms of creating energy. The committee’s methodology for optimizing technologies and production methods as means to achieve the government’s renewable energy goals and its decision not to promote cost driven, feed-in tariffs will also be explained.

These policies are designed to encourage grid parity in Israel, which occurs when an alternative energy source can be generated at the same cost as the existing electrical grid and traditional power sources. Reaching grid parity is considered an essential point in the development and use of renewable and alternative energy sources.

Prof. Kandel is the Head of the National Economic Council in Israel and serves as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Israel. Prof. Kandel is also a professor at the School of Business and the Department of Economics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is a member of the Center for the Study of Rationality at the Hebrew University, a Research Fellow of the Center for Economic Policy in London and a Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute.

Prof. Kandel will be giving his presentation, titled Announcing the Israeli Government Grid Parity Policy, as the keynote speaker during the plenary session on Solar Energy on the Way to Grid Parity on November 27 at 2:50 pm in the Big Blue Hall in the Dan Hotel.

Other speakers at this year’s Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Conference include Eric Isaacs, Director of Argonne National Laboratory in the United States, Dr. Uzi Landau, Minister of Energy and Water Resources in Israel, Professor Ray Wills, Director of the Sustainable Energy Association in Australia, Martin O’Malley, Governor of Maryland in the United States, and Reji Kumar Pillai, President of the Smart Grid Forum in India.
