Executive Summary:

After the poor performance in 2009-10 due to widespread drought and erratic monsoon rains in 2009, India's food sector roared back between 2010-2012, with record production of most major crops such as rice, wheat, pulses and oilseeds.

Agriculture has been the backbone of India's economy since India's independence. In 2010, India ranked among the world's five largest producers of many cash crops such as coffee and cotton. As of 2011, it is also one of the world's five largest producers of livestock and poultry meat, with one of the fastest growth rates.

Agriculture accounted for 18% of India's GDP and provided jobs to 60% of India's total population. Services, which contributed a hefty 62% to the GDP, only employed 28% of the population. Total exports have been increasing throughout 2001 to 2009, representing a 200% increase from 2001 to 2009. Imports have been more or less the same for the last three years. Advances in agriculture technology has provided India the impetus to increase its food production, but the impact of the agriculture sector on the total national export has fallen since 2004 from 12.7% to 10.23% in 2009.

This report goes on to discuss India's position in world agriculture, the impact of the monsoon rains on agriculture, policy and regulation by the Indian government in recent times and market outlook.
