Worldwide Power Generation Capacity from Biogas Will Double by 2022, Forecasts Pike Research

BOULDER, Colo.--()--Sometimes referred to as biomethane, waste gas, or renewable gas, biogas results from the anaerobic digestion of organic materials. It is one of most versatile energy carriers available, and has potential uses in a number of end-use applications. According to a recent report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, biogas will play a key role in the emerging renewable energy market. Worldwide power generation capacity from commercial biogas facilities will more than double over the next decade, growing from 14.5 gigawatts (GW) in 2012 to 29.5 GW in 2022, the study concludes.

“Biogas can meet demand in power, heat, and transportation markets, address a range of environmental issues, and may be deployed on both an integrated and distributed basis,” says senior research analyst Mackinnon Lawrence. “What’s more, the expansion of the biogas industry, which uses stable and well-understood processes, hinges on innovative applications and business models rather than breakthrough technologies.”

Ultimately, those models depend upon waste disposal and management having value, which a diverse set of industries share, according to the report. In some cases biogas may be produced and consumed on-site – as with on-farm digesters producing electricity from manure, or landfill gas recovery systems that turn waste into transportation fuel for captive garbage truck fleets. Alternatively, upgraded biogas may be “dropped into” natural gas infrastructure and distributed further afield. Methane, the key product produced in the anaerobic digestion process, can also be utilized in industrial processes and as a raw material in industry applications such as renewable chemical production.

The report, “Renewable Biogas”, analyzes the global market opportunity for biogas capture across four key industrial segments: municipal solid waste, agriculture, industrial, and sewage treatment. The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the demand drivers, business models, policy factors, and technology issues associated with the rapidly-developing market for biogas production and utilization. Key industry players are profiled in depth and worldwide revenue and capacity forecasts for raw biogas and RNG production, segmented by region and industrial segment, extend through 2022.
