Humedica Hosts Life Sciences Industry Forum on Optimizing Population Health with EHR Data

Industry leaders gather to discuss importance of leading the way for big data in life sciences

BOSTON--()--Humedica, a Boston based clinical intelligence company, hosted a Life Sciences Industry Forum in Philadelphia on October 11, 2012. Industry leaders and panelists, Lynn Peters, Senior Brand Manager of Takeda, Puneet Sapra, Senior Director Worldwide Business Development & Innovation of Pfizer, and Brian Cain Vice President, Global Market Research and Analytics of Merck, discussed the importance of leveraging clinical data across the enterprise as well as the associated opportunities and challenges.

Guest speaker, Alan Krumholz, MD, FAAP, DFACMQ, Vice President in the Mayo Clinic Health System and President of the American College of Medical Quality, shared his experiences in utilizing electronic health record data to manage patient populations and deliver quality care.

Michael Weintraub, Humedica’s President and CEO, opened the forum with remarks centered on the convergence of several health care megatrends. "The accelerated adoption of EMR's and underlying clinical data, the analytic power enabled by Big Data, and the shifting economic landscape driven by health care reform, are bringing together the technologies – information assets – financial incentives that can and will drive significant change moving forward."

The panelists echoed the need for change, agreeing that it was time to take a leadership role and leverage clinical data to find the insights that demonstrate the value of certain treatments for specific patient cohorts. Puneet Sapra, explained, “If we look back ten years from now, we will see that at this point in time, by developing our capabilities to work with new types of health care data we took an important step in improving quality of care and lowering the cost of care.” Brian Cain added, “We need to take a leadership role, the change is dramatic but we need to help set the path to taking this information and making it meaningful for our businesses. This kind of clinical data adds value to our decisions.” Lynn Peters agreed concluding, “It’s hard to understand the real value of this data, until you put it into use. We all need this type of data; we need to understand what happens to the patient along the continuum of care. We need the increased specificity and we need it yesterday.”

Dr. Krumholz speaking from a provider’s point of view said, “The clinical data allows us to not only predict and manage the present but to influence the future.”

The forum ended with a demonstration of Humedica’s NorthStar™ platform where the audience was able to view clinical insights derived from de-identified, aggregated, longitudinal patient population data across the care continuum. The advanced analytics platform demonstrated the value of the clinical data including an understanding of treatment utilization, physician brand choices and which patient segments benefit most from which therapy.
