cyPOP Launches and Challenges Social Media Status Quo

Digital platform focuses on interests vs. loose personal connections

SEATTLE--()--cyPOP, an intricate online community, unveiled its public beta today, enabling visitors to collect, share, explore and discuss similar interests in a new and unique way.

On cyPOP, the focus of activity is the interest, not the individual, further enabling users to keep their activities as public – or private – as they wish. Also prevalent across cyPOP is the concept of interest mapping, visualized through a user-friendly “language” of blocks of various colors and sizes that also function as a navigational tool on the service.

Activity on cyPOP primarily occurs via three functions:

  • Cafés – locations where interactive discussions on similar interests via posts, comments, Twitter integration and live chat are happening 24/7
  • cyPOP bookmarklet – When attached to a browser, it can be used to capture any type of content from the web (text, pictures, articles and videos) to import into cyPOP folios
  • Folios - folders used to organize the captured content, which can be stored privately for personal or future use, or made public for any cyPOP visitor to explore and interact with

The inspiration for cyPOP is borne out of a number of areas, most prominently the popularity of digital cafés in South Korea, and the realization that many of today’s popular technologies leave users with a now what?” experience – one that cyPOP is looking to solve.

“One of our co-founders, Josie Baik, recognized a void in much of our social communities in the U.S. as compared to what she was seeing in Korea,” said Glenn Walker, CEO and co-founder, cyPOP. “In South Korea, digital communities go beyond simply who you know and venture deeper into connecting with others through specific interests – and we thought we could make that happen in the U.S. and beyond by localizing and expanding on the café concept.”

In addition to individuals’ participation in cafés, folios and the use of the cyPOP bookmarklet, any blog or other publisher can build an instant group of new fans it might not previously have reached by importing its posts or content from WordPress, Blogger, tumblr or Flickr into a dedicated cyPOP café, drawing in readers looking for topics of interest to them.

From a business perspective, cyPOP provides a unique digital destination for organizations to interact with current and potential customers through branded online cafés that facilitate loyalty building and participation. Most notably, cyPOP allows brands to interact equally as individuals would within cafés and folios on the platform, unlike almost every other social networking service. Ultimately, cyPOP aims to provide analytics-centered data for participating companies for use in building advertising and even micro-payment offerings to strategically enhance branded cafés.
