IMA Commemorates 40th Anniversary of CMA’s Impact on the Accounting Profession

MONTVALE, N.J--()--Over the course of its 40-year history, the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) credential, offered by IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants), has played a major role in the development of the management accounting profession.

Since its launch in 1972, more than 37,000 professionals have earned CMA certification by passing a rigorous exam covering planning; performance and control; financial decision-making; ethics and more. The ICMA® (Institute of Certified Management Accountants) oversees the certification process and ensures relevance as the profession evolves.

Advancing the management accounting profession in countless ways, the CMA certification continues to grow, as evidenced by:

  • The Global Rise of the CMA: From its roots as a U.S.-based certification, the CMA is now held by professionals in almost 100 countries with projected future growth. In China, for example, it’s estimated there’s a need for 300,000 or more management accountants.
  • Proven Differentiator in the Accounting Field: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for finance professionals in the U.S. will grow 16 percent between 2010 and 2020, and accounting professionals with certification have greater career and earning potential.

“For 40 years, IMA’s CMA program has focused specifically on the competencies required by organizations and CFOs to protect investors and drive business value,” said Jeff Thomson, CMA, IMA president and CEO, who was recently featured in Accounting Today’s Top 100 Most Influential People.
