ARLINGTON, Va. & SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® and Solekai Systems today announced the availability of sample bit streams to assist TV designers in applying CEA-CEB21, Recommended Practice for Selection and Presentation of DTV Audio.
CEA-CEB21 provides guidance on how to determine available audio programs and assist consumers in their selection. The released sample streams match the examples found in CEA-CEB21, enabling designers to assess design options for digital TVs (DTVs), which go beyond the simple Secondary Audio Program (SAP) found in analog TVs.
For example, each video program broadcast on a digital TV can include multiple audio programs, including Spanish language and video descriptions, the audio narration of the action depicted in the video portion of the television programming. These video descriptions assist the visually impaired.
CEA is also working with the FCC and a diverse group of stakeholders to pave a way forward for reliable delivery of video descriptions, and Solekai Systems designed a sample stream that provides video descriptions compliant with the latest accessibility standards. The challenge is to make video descriptions available to the large base of installed DTVs that were designed before standards were updated, while enabling future DTVs to take advantage of all the available digital audio capabilities. Broadcasters, operators and manufacturers can use this stream to evaluate best practices to support required delivery of video description.
