Cellport Names Ray Sokola President

Ex-Motorola Wireless/Telematics CTO Heads Cellport as Company Expands Its Connected Vehicle Leadership

BOULDER, Colo.--()--Cellport Systems, worldwide pioneer of automotive Telematics technology and inventor of the first Internet-connected vehicle, has named wireless industry executive Ray Sokola as president.

In this newly-created position, Sokola directs Cellport’s strategic growth to expand its US and worldwide patents and partnerships in the automotive connectivity, machine-to-machine (M2M) and equipment manufacturing sectors.

“As one of the key architects of Motorola’s storied Telematics business, Ray Sokola is uniquely qualified to lead Cellport, said Pat Kennedy, Cellport founder and Chairman. “Our wireless connectivity patents and thought leadership in the ever-growing automotive/mobile data arena are a perfect match with Ray’s demonstrated expertise in technology, innovation and management.”

Sokola was formerly Corporate VP/CTO of Motorola’s $10 billion Home and Networks division, VP/GM of Motorola’s Telematics business and VP of Future Technology at Tyco Electronics. During his 30 year career at Motorola, he was awarded 19 wireless technology patents and was a three-time winner of Motorola’s Patent of the Year.

Since 1993, Cellport’s focus on automotive communications/connectivity research has secured foundational patents which comprise its Handset Connectivity and Mobile Network Technology portfolios. This body of work has enabled producers and equipment manufacturers to create advanced capabilities for an Internet-connected vehicle.

Today, Cellport’s patented telematics technologies, coupled with its open licensing model, are the backbone of connected vehicles; providing newly emerging M2M and vehicle solutions for businesses and consumers alike. Popular automotive communications applications, such as Google search, infotainment and downloading directions/music to the vehicle, use Internet connectivity for ease, simplicity and cost savings.

Cellport continues to advance research in the wireless and vehicle markets; having licensed its technology over the past decade to nearly a dozen firms including Motorola, Continental AG and Harman International. These companies, and others, have used Cellport’s patent portfolios to create in-vehicle systems found in over twenty million vehicles in the US and abroad.
