Magic Johnson Foundation (MJF) and AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) are honored to announce that they will host the premiere of ESPN Films’ and NBA Entertainment’s The Announcement, the untold story of Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson and his triumphant journey living with HIV. The Announcement, a gripping documentary directed by Nelson George, will have its world premiere at Regal Cinemas L.A. LIVE Stadium 14 in downtown Los Angeles with the foundations’ red carpet, invitation-only V.I.P. gala screening on Tuesday, March 6th (remarks and screening at 7:30pm; doors open at 6:30pm). The evening will begin with a star-studded red carpet followed by brief remarks from the hosts before the viewing of the documentary.

The V.I.P. evening screening of ‘The Announcement’ will follow a private 11:00am morning screening of the film at the same Regal Cinema theater hosted by MJF and AHF for 500 Los Angeles-area high school students. After viewing the documentary, the students will participate in the E.R.A.S.E. HIV Youth Summit ((Empowering & Reinforcing Awareness of Students through Education), an educational panel and Q&A session with Mr. & Mrs. Johnson and other individuals working in the field to fight HIV/AIDS. ‘The Announcement’ will then air publicly on television for the first time five days later, Sunday March 11th, 9pm ET on ESPN.

On November 7, 1991, Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson first announced to the world he was HIV-positive, and from that day on, he has been tirelessly fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic and advocating for those living with HIV/AIDS. ESPN documented Mr. Johnson’s personal journey, how the world has been affected since his announcement and the current state of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Among those interviewed in ‘The Announcement’ are Johnson’s wife, Cookie, and son, Andre Johnson; Larry Bird, James Worthy, Kurt Rambis, Jerry West, Lon Rosen, longtime friend and agent; David Stern, NBA Commissioner; Karl Malone, Arsenio Hall, Chris Rock and Michael Weinstein, AHF president.

“ESPN Films graciously provided the Magic Johnson Foundation and AIDS Healthcare Foundation with the opportunity to host these premiere screenings to share Mr. Johnson’s extraordinary story with select audiences including hundreds of Los Angeles-area high school students who will join us for the morning event,” said Amelia Williamson, President of the Magic Johnson Foundation. “Mr. Johnson and his wife, Cookie, will take part in an educational panel and Q&A with these students immediately following the morning screening. Other individuals working in the field to fight HIV/AIDS who will join on the panel and Q&A include the CDC’s Robert E. Bailey, II; Cynthia Davis, a respected, longtime Southland AIDS advocate and assistant professor and program director at the Medical Sciences Institute at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science as well as AHF President Michael Weinstein.”

“Magic Johnson is a hero and icon in the fight against AIDS. We applaud the courage and leadership he continues to show in this battle over the years and thank ESPN Films for both pointing a lens at his remarkable life and for allowing AHF and Magic Johnson Foundation the honor of hosting the premiere of The Announcement,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “For over ten years, Magic and AHF have forged a partnership that now includes six free AHF ‘Magic’ Johnson treatment clinics and several nationwide HIV testing initiatives. We recently announced plans for three new AHF ‘Magic’ Johnson clinics: Brooklyn, NY; Ft. Worth, TX and Atlanta, GA. As a public figure—and through his own personal experience living successfully with HIV—Magic serves as a beacon, letting others who may also be infected know that seeking medical care and lifesaving antiretroviral treatment is the right thing to do.”

Johnson, whose business interests include a wide portfolio of successful ventures operating under the umbrella of his Magic Johnson Enterprises, is also is Chairman and Founder of the respected non-profit Magic Johnson Foundation, which raises funds for community-based organizations focused on HIV/AIDS education and prevention. The Foundation also works to develop programs and provide services that address the broader educational, health and social needs of ethnically diverse, urban communities throughout the nation.

Sponsors for the premiere of The Announcement include Bank of America, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and AHF. The daytime screening and ERASE Youth Summit is also co-sponsored by Ralphs/Food For Less.
