Newport News Shipbuilding Chooses Exostar for Enhanced Supplier Collaboration Solution

Migration from Legacy Platform Will Reduce Costs, Improve Security and Scalability, and Support New Functionality

HERNDON, Va.--()--Exostar, whose cloud-based solutions enable secure, cost-effective business-to-business collaboration, today announced its suite of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings, including its Supply Chain Platform (SCP), Federated Identity Service (FIS), and Managed Access Gateway (MAG), are being deployed for Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII).

HII became an independent company earlier this year. As part of that transaction, NNS needed to transition its supplier collaboration activities to a new electronic tool. About 500 suppliers will now collaborate with their NNS counterparts via the following components of the Exostar solution suite:

  • SCP – Processes all Purchase Orders/Changes and responses, as well as electronic Requests for Quote and responses. SCP also includes modules such as inventory management, demand planning, and business intelligence that empower NNS to expand and scale functional depth and breadth in the future.
  • FIS – Handles the issuance of the Medium Level of Assurance (MLOA) hardware digital certificates and the FIPS 140-2 Level USB hardware tokens individuals will require to access SCP. Because these credentials are standards-compliant, suppliers are well-positioned to reuse them to reach applications from other customers connected to Exostar’s Identity Hub.
  • MAG – Controls access to all applications connected to the Exostar Identity Hub, including SCP, by enforcing strong two-factor authentication. MAG ensures NNS and its suppliers operate in a more secure environment, verifying identities by confirming the validity of both username/password and the MLOA/USB hardware credentials.

Applications in the Exostar solution suite also will support NNS’s business processes to share scorecards, coded notes/terms and conditions, and other documents with suppliers. In turn, suppliers can open discussion forums with buyers and securely deliver documents.

“NNS needed to quickly move its suppliers to an alternative solution, without sacrificing security, functionality, or performance,” said Dan Pfeifle, Exostar’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “With Exostar, NNS is getting a cost-effective, integrated solution with the scalability to accommodate growth and the flexibility to address evolving requirements. Suppliers benefit from an improved user experience and access to the Exostar ecosystem, where they can consistently engage with NNS and others.”
