LAUSANNE, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW SA), a joint venture between Nestlé and General Mills, today announced that its Innovation Centre has become the first industrial building in Switzerland to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The state-of-the-art technical facility located in Orbe, Switzerland, designs and develops new platforms to drive CPW’s future growth, including product innovation, technology, packaging, and nutrition research and development.
Operational as of February 2011, the 110,000-square-foot global Innovation Centre incorporates several sustainable features, including:
- Highly efficient, energy-saving elements that drive down energy consumption by more than 30 percent, including back up steam heating generated from coffee ground waste, and the use of alpine snow melt for cooling.
- On-site collection of more than 50,000 gallons of rain water annually to supply 100 percent of the water used for irrigation and sanitary installations. This, in addition to low-flow, water-efficient plumbing, reduces water consumption by more than 65 percent.
- Preservation and restoration of native landscaping and use of open space vegetation to cover nearly three-quarters of the building’s grounds.
- Superior ventilation that exceeds fresh air requirements.
- Extensive use of natural light that provides a clear, outside view to anyone working in the building.
LEED is an internationally recognised building certification system that provides a framework for integrating environmental sustainability into a building’s design, construction, operation and maintenance.
