Winzler & Kelly’s Sustainable Engineering Projects Recognized for Excellence

SAN FRANCISCO--()--The American Society of Civil Engineers’ San Francisco Section (www.asce-sf.org) recently announced its 2011 Engineering Excellence Awards. Winzler & Kelly (www.w-and-k.com) garnered two of the eight awards including recognition for the Middle Harbor Habitat Enhancement Project, as Outstanding Environmental Project of the Year, and the Santa Rosa Utilities Field Office, as Outstanding Architectural Project of the Year.

The Middle Harbor Habitat Enhancement Project (www.w-and-k.com/projects.aspx?id=55) was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (www.spn.usace.army.mil) and the Port of Oakland (www.portofoakland.com/environm/prog_02.asp) in order to enhance both the Port’s function and the surrounding ecosystem habitat in San Francisco Bay. As a part of the overall project to deepen the Port’s shipping channels, USACE, the Port and various agencies and community representatives worked together to develop a concept for dredged material beneficial reuse that would result in the restoration of 90 acres to an ecological reserve that incorporates deep water, shallow water and shoreline habitats. By designing the fill placement and adjacent levee structures to support natural tidal action, the project supports eelgrass habitat for small fishes, on which the endangered Least Tern feeds. The habitat enhancement area is directly adjacent to a Least Tern colony in Alameda and Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, the only public beach in Oakland. The project provides the community with an extraordinary opportunity to interact with an ecosystem that mimics San Francisco Bay’s natural state.

The Santa Rosa Utilities Field Office (http://www.w-and-k.com/projects.aspx?id=249) is an example of a state-of-the-art public project that allows the City of Santa Rosa (www.ci.santa-rosa.ca.us) to provide sustainable, reliable public service well into the 21st century. Designed in partnership with TLCD Architects (www.tlcd.com) and the Maintenance Design Group (www.maintenancedesigngroup.com), the campus reuses a 30-acre site that once housed the City’s wastewater treatment plant and a public safety firing range. With operations and administration buildings, a training facility, a resource warehouse, shops and supporting infrastructure, the campus incorporates a number of sustainable design elements including photovoltaic arrays, innovative lighting, heating and cooling systems and low impact site design with bioswales and native landscaping.

“Winzler & Kelly is delighted to have been a part of these innovative projects developed by our clients. The recognition for excellence reflects their vision and leadership as well as the commitment our professionals have to delivering high quality projects.”
