WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.--()--The Dole Nutrition Institute (DNI), a division of Dole Food Company, Inc., (NYSE:DOLE) today announced the release of its first food product, Dole Portobello Mushroom Powder, an all-natural, potent, plant-based source of vitamin D.

Increasing awareness of the importance of vitamin D has led to a boom in supplement sales – but consumers don’t know that most of these supplements are derived from sheep fat, yeast or fish livers. The DNI is launching the first-ever plant-based source of vitamin D with Dole Portobello Mushroom Powder. The new product is ideal for a variety of diets including vegetarian and vegan.

“Dole’s Portobello Mushroom Powder is all-natural, plant-based source of vitamin D that’s great in soups, stews, casseroles and side dishes,” said Dole Nutrition Institute Senior Vice President Jennifer Grossman. “This product is a realization of our commitment to innovation, and drive to meet consumer health needs,” she said. “Dole Portobello Mushrooms naturally generate vitamin D upon exposure to light – much like the human body. By drying and grinding the mushrooms, we’ve concentrated this process, providing a natural, safe way to meet your vitamin D needs.”

The limited-supply vitamin D mushroom powder will be available to consumers via www.doledepot.com in both 2 oz. and 3.5 oz. bottles.

The DNI, founded by David H. Murdock in 2003, provides consumers with educational resources on the benefits of a plant-based diet. These include an award-winning newsletter, Dole Nutrition News (2.5 million circulation), the recently published Dole Nutrition Handbook, videos, brochures, cookbooks and more. The Dole Food Company has been an industry leader in children’s nutrition education for nearly twenty years.
