Nutritional Management with Medical Food Alleviates Diabetes-Induced Large and Small Fiber Neuropathies

NEW ORLEANS--()--Results from a study which evaluated Metanx® on diabetic peripheral neuropathy using Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats, a model of Type 2 diabetes, were presented today at the American Diabetes Association 71st Scientific Sessions.

Diabetes disrupts the natural metabolic processes in both blood vessel and peripheral nerve tissues which often leads to progressive symptomatic diabetic neuropathy. In the present study, ZDF rats displayed peripheral nerve oxidative stress and diabetic peripheral neuropathy symptoms such as nerve conduction velocity deficit, small sensory fiber dysfunction, and intraepidermal nerve fiber loss. Metanx®, a medical food, alleviated diabetes-associated sensory nerve conduction velocity deficit and small sensory nerve fiber neuropathy, and, unlike many other experimental therapeutics tested thus far, induced small sensory fiber regeneration, potentially due to correction of oxidative stress.

Commenting on the study titled,Metanx Alleviates Diabetes-Induced Large and Small Fiber Neuropathies and Promotes Small Sensory Nerve Fiber Regeneration,” abstract # 0652-P, Dr. Obrosova from Pennington Biomedical Research Center, stated that “These are encouraging findings as pathogenetic therapeutics tested so far showed low efficacy in clinical trials or were withdrawn because of adverse side effects. Experimental studies of Metanx®, at the dose currently employed in clinical practice, demonstrated alleviation of both peripheral nerve function and morphology thus providing rationale for clinical neuropathy trials in human subjects with Type 2 diabetes.”

About Medical Foods and Metanx®

As regulated by the FDA, medical foods are specially formulated to manage a specific disease or condition for which medical evaluation, based on recognized scientific principles, has established distinct nutritional requirements. All components of a medical food must have GRAS status (Generally Recognized as Safe) as designated by the FDA or independent review.

Metanx® is a medical food dispensed by prescription and indicated for the distinct nutritional requirements of patients with endothelial dysfunction who present with loss of protective sensation and neuropathic pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Metanx® contains the active forms of folate and Vitamins B12 and B6 (L-methylfolate, methylcobalamin, and pyridoxal 5’-phosphate, respectively). Metanx® offers a nutritional benefit by improving endothelial function and maintaining blood flow in the vessels that carry important nutrients and oxygen to the peripheral nerves.
