June Issue of IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter Highlights Consumer Participation, The Internet Of Things, and Leveraging Investment in Fiber Optics

Articles Explore How Utilities Can Leverage Fiber Optic Communications with Carriers; Why Thinking Locally Is The Smart Path For Smart Grid; Work That Will Lead To The Internet Of Things; Opportunities For Consumers To Have Their Say

PISCATAWAY, N.J.--()--IEEE, the world's largest professional association advancing technology for humanity, today announced the June edition of the IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter, offering exclusive information on Smart Grid, is available online at: http://smartgrid.ieee.org/publications/smart-grid-newsletter.

The June issue of the IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter brings readers a range of Smart Grid insight and information from experts and authorities in electricity and energy, communications and the Internet, and economics, and policy:

  • Principal Analyst Michael Kennedy of ACG Research makes the business case for fiber optics in support of Smart Grid communications and leveraging the investment through the lease of capacity to providers of general broadband services. Kennedy has helped electrical utilities develop networking strategies and networking vendors with marketing efforts. Michael was Managing Partner of Network Strategy Partners, recently acquired by ACG Research;
  • Thomas Bourgeois, with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Northeast Clean Energy Application Center and the Pace Energy Climate Center, and William Pentland with the Pace Energy Climate Center cut through the abstract business case for Smart Grid to show how utilities and regulators must roll out Smart Grid technologies in a locally relevant and beneficial way to keep their business in balance;
  • Dominique Guinard, researcher at the Institute for Pervasive Computing at ETH Zurich explores how the Internet of Things and Smart Grid are envisioned working together as communications protocols and software applications advance. The goal is to create a real-world grid in which smart things provide services easily combined to create new applications, an eco-system increasingly more ready to implement the big visions of Smart Grids. In 2007, Guinard co-founded the WebofThings.com initiative to reflect on how to use the Web to create a global grid of interconnected everyday objects and machines;
  • John Kelly, Deputy Director of the non-profit Galvin Electricity Initiative, introduces the first program to involve consumers in a performance-rating program of Smart Grid projects. The Galvin Electricity Initiative is developing the Perfect Power Seal of Approval, which will evaluate and recognize the nation’s top-performing microgrid projects in four consumer-focused areas, Kelly leads research into improved electricity governance models and development of Perfect Power prototypes.
