LAS VEGAS--()--Hu Meena, president and CEO of Cellular South, has been elected Chairman of the Board of the Rural Cellular Association (RCA), the nation’s leading industry group representing competitive wireless communications providers.

Meena was unanimously elected by association members from across the U.S. during RCA’s 19th annual Convention and Innovation Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. He will serve as chairman until April 2012.

“Wireless communications and mobile computing devices are an essential part of every consumer’s personal and professional life,” said Meena, who heads the nation’s largest privately owned wireless communications provider. “All consumers, no matter where they live or work, deserve access to the latest devices and the best networks operating with the latest technology.”

Meena takes over the leadership post as the association works to ensure that customers of its member companies have access to data services and devices whenever they are in range of a compatible network and that pro-competitive and pro-consumer policies are pursued on issues like interoperability, Universal Service support, spectrum allocation and device exclusivity.

“Deployment of next generation 4G high-speed data services and access to interoperable nationwide 4G data services is the future of our industry and critically important to our members and their customers,” Meena said. “We share the vision and support federal policies that encourage and support the deployment of broadband services throughout all parts of the U.S.”

RCA is continuing to work with the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Congress to support legislation and federal policies that promote ubiquitous wireless broadband deployment and encourage healthy competition between service providers.

“This is a critical time for our industry and for consumers, especially those that live in rural and regional markets,” said Steven K. Berry, president and CEO of RCA. “Hu is an industry veteran. He’s been a tireless and eloquent advocate for competitive carrier issues for more than two decades, and we look forward to his leadership and direction.”

Meena was general manager and vice president of operations and development before being president of Cellular South in 1997. During his tenure, Cellular South has grown to become the nation’s largest privately held wireless communications provider and the eighth largest carrier in the U.S. The company provides wireless communications services to all of Mississippi and parts of four other states in the southeast region.
