James Niebling, Portland, Michigan Math Teacher, Teams With FreeScore.com To Teach Class On Credit Scores

PORTLAND, Mich.--()--This month Jim Niebling taught his senior financial algebra class at Portland High School a practical math lesson they can use for life – he taught them about credit scores. Jim teamed with FreeScore.com to develop his lesson plans on credit scores.

FreeScore.com has embarked on a comprehensive educational program, "Good Scores Open Doors℠" to help close the credit knowledge gap in America. Elements of that program were used to help Niebling create his credit score module.

Said Niebling, “While every person might not use much of what they learn in Algebra 2 and Calculus throughout their life, every person must understand credit scores. Good credit and good credit scores can be the key to the future for students in getting a loan, and even getting a job.”

According to Carrie Coghill, director of consumer education for FreeScore.com, “We commend Jim for understanding the importance of credit scores in the lives of these students. We were thrilled to help him develop a lesson plan to help these students understand the basics of good credit and good credit scores.”

Michigan students are required to take a math class in every year of high school. A December 2008 law signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm allows financial literacy classes to count as a math credit.

It is increasingly important to make sure that the future generation is prepared to manage their finances as they enter adulthood – especially since the recent credit crisis.

Added Niebling, “Knowledge and understanding are the building blocks for today’s youth to develop their financial savviness. If students today learn what will affect their credit scores, what information makes up their credit report, and how credit scores will affect their future buying power, the risk of a future financial crisis due to unchecked credit will be lower.”

According to a senior in Niebling’s class, “We learned credit scores have an enormous amount of power. They determine the amount of money you can get for a loan and how high or low the interest rates can be. We found out people should really periodically check their credit scores.”
