Brussels Auto Show: Boston-Power’s Highest Energy Density Battery Powers Saab 9-3 ePower

Award-winning Company’s Swing™ Lithium-ion Battery System Used in Saab’s First All-electric Vehicle

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. & BRUSSELS--()--Boston-Power, Inc.’s game-changing lithium-ion battery technology is a highlight of the all-electric 9-3 ePower Saab is showcasing today at the European Motor Show Brussels. Saab is hosting a luncheon and press conference at the event spotlighting the ePower as part of its line-up of new cars that also includes its new 9-4X crossover.

The prototype for a test fleet of 70 vehicles, the 9-3 ePower features a 35.5 kWh Boston-Power Swing lithium-ion battery pack that sets an electric vehicle (EV) benchmark for energy density – delivering a projected driving range of approximately 200 km/124 miles and contributing to a much lower total battery weight. The battery pack is intended to support re-charge cycles equivalent to 10 years of average use. Using 400V three-phase charging at 16 amps, it can be fully recharged in about 3-6 hours, depending on depletion status. With common 230V one-phase charging at 16 amps, the charging time is approximately 10 hours. If the voltage of the electrical feed is raised, charging times can be greatly reduced, as there is no limitation on the battery’s input capacity.

The battery pack’s safety is ensured by multiple redundant safety components unique to Boston-Power’s Swing battery cells, as well as the overall battery pack design. The environmental sustainability of Boston-Power’s battery cells is underscored by several global accreditations – including the prestigious Nordic Ecolabel and the China United Environmental Center Certification (CEC). Boston-Power’s technology is the first lithium-ion battery platform to be accredited by both organizations.

“Green cars deserve green batteries,” said Boston-Power Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Önnerud. “Boston-Power is answering that call, while delivering unparalleled safety, quicker charging, and best-in-class energy density to provide long driving range and long service life.”

Dr. Lampe-Önnerud joined Saab executives at the worldwide official unveiling of the ePower at the Paris Motor Show in September.
