LONDON--()--Non-profit organisation Peace One Day and IT firm UST Global successfully launched the #tweetforpeace campaign at the first annual Peace One Day London gala dinner held at the Hurlingham Club last night.

The venue played host to a number of high-profile guests including Lily Cole, Jeremy Gilley and Pixie Lott who, as a supporter of the campaign, also performed at the event. With over 300 pledges from guests from companies such as Aviva, Thomson Reuters, HSBC and Schroders, it is expected the #tweetforpeace campaign will succeed in reaching over 50 million people globally.

Joe Nalkara, President of UST Global, said, “Last night’s event was a huge success. Spreading the message of Peace One Day’s initiative through incentivising our guests to put to good use their social media networks was our way of contributing as a company to the humanitarian efforts spearheaded by Jeremy Gilley.”

Jeremy Gilley, Founder of Peace One Day said, “The #tweetforpeace campaign will raise high levels of awareness of Peace Day, 21 September and will no doubt make a significant contribution to Peace One Day’s goal of reaching 1.5 billion people with the message of Peace Day in 2014. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to UST Global for their fantastic support and also to all of the guests who attended the wonderful event last night.”

Peace Day is marked worldwide on September 21. Peace Day is an opportunity for UN agencies and NGOs to gear their ongoing life-saving activities to a global reach while encouraging conflicting parties to cease fire and stop violence for one day.

About Peace One Day

Founded in 1999 by filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, the non-profit organisation Peace One Day drove the initiative that led to the unanimous adoption by the United Nations member states of an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September – Peace Day.

In 2007, Jeremy Gilley and Peace One Day Ambassador Jude Law travelled to Afghanistan to help develop and document preparations for life-saving activities across the country for Peace Day. As a result of this work, since 2007, Peace Day agreements in the region have resulted in the immunisation against polio of 4.5 million children.

With the day well-established, Peace One Day’s objective is to institutionalise Peace Day around the world, making it self-sustaining. A report supported by McKinsey & Company estimated that around 470 million people were aware of Peace Day in 2013, with around 8 million behaving more peacefully as a result of being involved in activities on the day. Peace One Day's target for 2014 is to reach 1.5 billion people with the message of Peace Day.
