TransCore’s Canadian Freight Volumes Pick up Marginally

TORONTO--()--TransCore Link Logistics Canadian freight volumes rose two percent from April to May. Even with this modest monthly increase, year-over-year volumes continue their impressive rise, increasing 31 percent over May 2013.

TransCore’s Canadian Freight Index accurately measures trends from roughly 5,000 of Canada’s trucking companies. Real-time and historical data on total truck and load volumes, as well as ratios in specific areas, can be accessed from TransCore’s Posting Index.

Cross-border postings accounted for 69 percent of total load volumes.

  • Cross-border loads originating in Canada destined to the United States climbed a significant 70 percent year-over-year.
  • Cross-border loads originating in the United States destined for provinces within Canada increased 10 percent year-over-year.
  • The top five states of origin for loads destined to Canada ordered from highest to lowest total loads were Ohio, Texas, California, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Intra-Canada load volumes represented 25 percent of the total volumes for May and jumped 34 percent compared to May 2013.

Representing continued tight capacity, truck levels remain low compared to the same period last year. Although, equipment postings increased four percent month-over-month; annual postings dropped 10 percent from May 2013.

The equipment-to-load ratio showed a slight increase to 1.49 from 1.46 the previous month. However, year-over-year, May’s ratio still demonstrates a 46 percent improvement.

Information within the freight index includes all domestic, cross-border and interstate data submitted by Loadlink’s Canadian-based customers.
